Macroinvertebrates Webinar

Learn more about the Macroinvertebrate Section and the work we do with our webinars on our Snail inventory project and how we utilize eDNA in all our projects.

Freshwater snails are a relatively understudied component of the Upper Delaware River (check out the ANSP blog in April of 2023) however, they are an important part of the ecosystem as they play a significant role in nutrient cycling; they are a food source for waterfowl, fish, and some mammals. Compared to many other faunal groups in the Delaware River, freshwater snails have received little attention.

Few studies have included snails as a major focus and even the ones that mention snails rarely identify them to species level. This project began when a large group of potentially invasive species on the banks of the river were discovered by the National Park Service staff at the Milanville Park Office. Staff realized that snails were understudied in the Upper Delaware. This project was a collaborative partnership with the National Park Service (Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River) and made possible through the support from the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Division.
