Founders Day Museum Discount

PHILADELPHIA, March 11, 2014

To celebrate the day of its founding, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is offering pay-as-you-wish admission on Friday, March 21, the museum announced today.

Officially established on March 21, 1812, the Academy is the nation’s oldest natural history museum and a world leader in biodiversity and environmental research. The museum is a leading cultural destination in Philadelphia, especially for generations of schoolchildren and families.

Regular admission is $15 for adults; $13 for children 3 through 12, seniors, college students, and military personnel; and free for members and children under 3. On March 21, visitors can decide themselves what to pay. Admission to the special exhibit Dinosaurs Unearthed, on view through March 30, will remain $5 per person, $3 for members. Founders Day is supported by Pepper Hamilton LLP.

In addition to the Academy’s signature exhibits, including live butterflies, dinosaurs, dioramas, and the children’s discovery center, visitors can enjoy these opportunities:

Library Reading Room—Newly Open to the Public

1–4 p.m.

See treasures from the Academy collections, newly open to library visitors on weekday afternoons. View a ballot box used to vote on the acceptance of Academy members. Find out what it means that John James Audubon’s membership was originally “blackballed,” and view a copy of the original Academy Constitution.

 

Naturalist Presentation

2:30 p.m.

Enjoy a short presentation by an Academy teacher-naturalist on an environmental or nature topic and featuring live animals and/or museum specimens.

 

The Birds of America Page Turning

3:15 p.m.

Head to the library reading room and watch the daily page turning of John James Audubon's 19th-century masterwork The Birds of America, arguably the most influential book on birds ever published.

 

New and Improved Outside In

All day

Visit the newly renovated children’s nature discovery center and meet live animals, view a stream from the bottom up, perch in a new eagle’s nest, and dig for shark teeth.

 

Fossil Prep Lab

All day

Watch as technicians work on the newly arrived T. rex fossils to prepare them for future study.

 

Science Live

All day

Chat with an Academy educator about a science topic of interest.

 

New Hands-on Invertebrate Cart

Check out a variety of live insects and try touching them.
