PHILADELPHIA, November 17, 2020

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University announced today that it will be closed until after the new year, in accordance with the city of Philadelphia’s new restrictions aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19.

Since late July, the museum has been operating on a Friday-through-Sunday schedule. With the city’s new mandatory rules regarding gatherings in public spaces, the museum will not reopen until sometime after Friday, Jan. 1.

“Although public health data tells us that museums have proved to be exceptionally safe visitor attractions during the pandemic,” said Academy President and CEO Scott Cooper, “we understand the extraordinary challenge confronting the city and support its commitment to controlling this resurgent virus as quickly as possible.

“We look forward to reopening soon, but in the meantime encourage everyone to join us virtually for exciting events and programs with our scientists, educators and other experts,” Cooper said. “Our website and social media channels will keep you updated on all the fun and informative learning opportunities we have planned this fall and winter.”

The exhibit Permian Monsters: Life Before the Dinosaurs, scheduled to open Saturday, Nov. 20, will be postponed until after Jan. 1. Wildlife Photographer of the Year also will resume upon the reopening.
