Zoologist, nursery inspector and economic entomologist, Fernald chose for special study the field of Hymenoptera, specifically the Sphecinae. His type material went to the U. S. National Museum. This collection of papers contains his own notes taken in Europe when he visited many museums for the purpose of studying specimens in his group of insects. The document contains 102 pages and discusses Sphecidae seen at Paris, Vienna, Wiesbaden, Halle, Berlin, Lund, Kiel, London, and at the Oxford University Museum. A special paper of 9 pages is evidently written by Peter Cameron discussing the species studied at Georgetown Museum. In conclusion, the notes take the form of a check list of the species studied in each of the special museums visited.
