As a young man, this native Philadelphian was associated from 1870 to 1882 with the Academy of Natural Sciences. Later he studied at Harvard and was appointed professor, holding that position from 1888-1935. His interest in biology varied from time to time and certainly no great stress was laid upon the study of insects in later years. The Catalogue of Local Lepidoptera in the Museum of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 1881, is further labeled: Vol. I, Diurnals (Cases 1-7 incl.) and consists of 5 leaves.
