<p>A German physician and botanist, Engelmann came to America as agent for his relatives who had purchased land in the Mississippi Valley. Shortly after arriving he started a medical practice in St. Louis, 1835. Botany was his avocation, as seen in his monographic studies of various special groups, which he collected during his frequent trips throughout America. Preserved here are two writings of Engelmann: (a) &#8220;Catalog of species and synonyms of the genus <emph render="italic">Aster </emph>in Torrey and Gray's Flora, vol. 2.&#8221; Since the Flora was published between the years 1835-43 and Engelmann wrote this part of the book, we have assigned the date of 1843 with a question; (b) &#8220;Specimens of woods from Texas, collected by F. Lindheimer in the neighborhood of New Braunfels,&#8221; n. d., in Engelmann's hand.</p>
