The Philadelphia Shell Show
October 27–28, 2018
Thousands of shells will be on display and for sale at the annual Philadelphia Shell Show, October 27–28, 2018, at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. The largest of its kind in the Northeast, the show features beautiful, competitive displays on mollusks by collectors, amateur scientists, and artists. Visitors will have the chance to shop an international shell market packed with jewelry, shells, books, and more. Members of the Philadelphia Shell Club will be on hand to answer questions and identify shells you’ve collected during your travels.
Featured Talk, 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday: The History of the Art of Shell Work
Shells have been used for a variety of purposes, including everything from currency to motifs in art and architecture. For centuries shells also have been used in various decorative art forms. Join John Whitenight, author of Under Glass: A Victorian Obsession, to explore the fascinating world of shell grottos, shell houses and follies, sailor valentines and extraordinary shell art found under antique glass domes.
