NEW! Academy Expedition Program

 

Summer is the time to dream big, live large and discover the world around you! Take a field trip with the Academy every day. Whether you’re hiking through the wilderness to test your survival skills, unearthing cretaceous fossils, rowing through waterways to collect macroinvertebrates or using your muscles to scale a rock wall, the Academy Expedition Program is your passport for a week of exploration, discovery and unbelievable fun! Each participant receives an Academy backpack and water bottle with registration.

Animal Training and Husbandry: Beginner

Teens can get hands-on animal care experience during this one-of-a-kind summer program. Teens will learn about the basic care of the Academy’s live animal collection and will assist keepers and educators in the general husbandry, feeding and training of mammals, birds, reptiles and invertebrates. Attendees will be introduced to positive reinforcement and clicker training methods. 

Program Activities

We have a week of great activities planned!

Participants will:

  • meet live animals and learn about basic handling and care
  • get an up-close and personal look at the live animals from our Live Animal Center
  • attend an wildlife rehabilitation inspired field trip
  • work with Academy staff to help prepare a naturalist presentation for Academy guests
  • and have fun!

Animal Training and Husbandry: Advanced

Teens will use the skills introduced in the beginner camp to set a specific animal behavior training plan for one of the Academy’s live animals. Teens will identify a desired behavior, work closely with Academy staff to set a plan and personally build that behavior with their assigned animal. The week will culminate in a presentation highlighting the animal’s progress. (Participants must take Animal Training and Husbandry: Beginner or have had participated in the 2018 Animal Husbandry Program to participate.)

Invertebrate Husbandry

Teens can tap into their inner entomologist while assisting keepers and educators in the general husbandry, feeding and handling of the live invertebrate collection at the Academy. Participants will prepare displays for various live invertebrates, including insects and arachnids. The group will learn about responsible collection and will collect at various sites in the Philadelphia region to add to the Academy’s live collection. Teens will also learn about scientific and personal specimen preservation.

We have a week of great activities planned! 

Participants will: 

  • meet live insects and learn about basic handling and care
  • get an up-close look at the animals from our invertebrate collection
  • venture into invertebrate-rich local parks in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to learn how to identify insects
  • attend an insect collection field trip
  • work with Academy staff to help prepare live invertebrate displays
  • and have fun!
