The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is proud to be a lead sponsor of the 2020 Philadelphia Environmental Film Festival. For the first time, the Festival will be entirely virtual, with 13 curated programs consisting of 50 films, panel discussions and filmmaker Q&As—all available for viewing from your own home.

Academy scientists, staff and friends of the Academy will appear in panel discussions and filmmaker Q&As for the following films:
Tribes on the Edge (Program 1 – Indigenous Perspectives)
Director Céline Cousteau is interviewed by Academy President and CEO Scott Cooper.
The River and the Wall (Program 2 – American Adventures)
Producer Hillary Pierce (The River and the Wall) talks with moderator Niki Stewart (Academy Chief Learning Engagement Officer), Carol Collier (Senior Advisor for Watershed Management and Policy), and Dane Ward, PhD (Assistant Teaching Professor, Department of Biodiversity, Earth & Environmental Science), about habitat fragmentation and impacts to community and local habitats such as pine barrens and waterways.
Shad Run (Program 3 – Regional Shorts)
Academy scientist David Keller, PhD (Head of Fisheries Department) talks about his experiences with American Shad in the Delaware River Basin.
Sea of Shadows (Program 5 – Oceans First)
Director Richard Ladkani (Sea of Shadows) talks with Mark Sabaj Perez, PhD (Interim Curator of Ichthyology), and Paul Callomon (Collection Manager of Malacology), about how collecting and trafficking of wild animals damage populations alongside a discussion of the importance and low impact of collecting for modern scientific purposes. This program is moderated by Michael Kaczmarczik, Adult Programs Developer.
Modified (Program 6 - Planet Food)
Director Aube Giroux (Modified) talks with Niki Stewart (Chief Leaning and Engagement Officer) about food, democracy and GMO labeling.
Microplastic Madness (Program 10 – Kid's Planet) (Especially for Kids!)
Thursday, September 24 at 3 p.m.
Children have the opportunity to ask the Directors of Microplastic Madness, Atsuko Quirk and Debby Lee Cohen, and Academy Scientists Marie Kurz, PhD (Senior Scientist & Biogeochemistry Section Leader, Patrick Center for Environmental Research), and Beth Watson, PhD (Wetlands Section Leader, Patrick Center for Environmental Research), questions about water quality and pollution that is too small to see. The program is moderated by Mary Ingram (WINS student) and part of the Academy's Earth & Water week.
The Story of Plastic (Program 11 - Plastic Problem)
Director Deia Schlosberg (The Story of Plastic) talks with moderator David Velinsky, PhD (Department Head, Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science & Senior Scientist, Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University) and Alex Danovitch (Zero Waste Collaborator) about the environmental impacts of plastic.
Public Trust (Program 13 - Public Lands)
Director David Garrett Byars (Public Trust) talks with Maura McCarthy, PhD (Executive Director of Fairmount Park Conservancy) about national and local public lands.
