Today is day four of Three Weeks Behind the Scenes, so it’s time to put on your goggles to take a sneak peak at what’s going on in our Patrick Center labs. Scientists in the Patrick Center for Environmental Research use this condenser unit, one part of a larger apparatus called a soxhlet extractor, to extract contaminants from sediment and fish for chemical analysis. Our scientists routinely use the unit in our large monitoring projects like New Jersey Toxics, which identifies PCBs and pesticides in fish and reports the results for use in consumption advisories.

Meet some of our Patrick Center scientists on Academy Earth Day at the Philadelphia Science Festival. On Saturday, April 21, Academy scientists will set up outside the museum along with 80 other exhibitors to showcase their sustainability research and provide information on preserving natural resources. Spend the day on the Parkway to enjoy family-friendly experiments, activities, games, and more.
