This volume of portraits of lepidoptera contains 43 pages, with 117 transfers. The scales from the wings of the insects are transferred to the paper, while the abdomens, heads and antennae are all painted in watercolor. In many cases the views of the back and front of the insect are shown side by side. Many are badly faded, and many have not been identified. A note on the front cover in Thomas Say's (1787 1834) hand states: "Presented by Prof. Gibson to Thomas Say," which dates it before Say's death in 1834. A presentation letter signed by Mrs. Lucy W. Say, addressed to the American Entomological Society, dated June 30, 1877, is tipped in.

Professor Gibson has not been further identified. A Professor John Banister Gibson, 1780-1853, was on the teaching staff at the University of Pennsylvania, but information about him shows only a geological and paleontological interest. He was a member of the 1st Geological State Survey of Pennsylvania in 1836 when Benjamin Say (father to Thomas) was chairman.

This album of transfer portraits of lepidoptera contains 43 pages, with 117 transfers. The scales from the wings of the insects are transferred to the paper, while the abdomens, heads and antennae are all painted in watercolor. The lepidoptera images are painted on laid paper and pasted into pages of the album, measuring 22 x 17 cm. The watercolors themselves measure from 1 x 3 cm. to 10 x 12 cm. In many cases the views of the back and front of the insect are shown side by side. Many are badly faded, and many lepidoptera have not been identified.
