English artist, not otherwise identified. An Alida Withoos, plant illustrator, flourished from 1660-1715 and may be the same. The “P” of the present signature, might possibly be read as an “AL,” abbreviation for Alida. Two of the signed watercolors are on vellum and the quality of the others suggests that all those on vellum possibly are by P. Withoos. Vellum watercolors are on pl. 31, 49, & 53, making a total of eight figures. In Marshal album (Coll. 941).
