Member of the Institut de France and of the Academie des sciences, de Paris, Huzard, the elder, was the best known animal husbandryman and veterinarian of his times. Although not a prolific writer, his library must have been extensive, since he wrote all the articles on domestic animals and veterinary medicine in the Nouveau Dictionnaire d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, 1803-4 and its revision in 1816-19. The Academy's copy of Temminck's work on pigeons, has various introductory pages in the hand of Huzard, a title-page, “De la Bibliotheque de J. B. Huzard” with a notation at top of the next page: “Notes Bibliographiques sur l'examplaire de l'Histoire naturelle des Pigeons, que j'ai dans ma Bibliotheque” (3 leaves) and following the printed half-title are 3 pages entitled “Extrait” giving information about the first two volumes of the work. Thus the date of the ms. notes can be placed after 1811, the date of publication of the 2d volume and before 1834 when the 3d volume was issued.
