The Calverts, Philip and Amelia, spent more than a year in this country studying natural history. The itinerary and field notes were preserved in 10 small notebooks, photographs were taken (31 included here) and a diary written, the latter occupying 2 volumes. From this material, their book was later published, Mrs. Calvert's manuscript volumes on the plants encountered, and many scientific articles dealing with the insects of Costa Rica were issued by Calvert. The photographs were included in the published book.
