This Irish botanist and physician visited Australia in 1853-6, and there collected and prepared over 20,000 specimens of Algae, publishing a list of the species under 600 specific names. After his main collections were placed in two institutions in Great Britain, the residue was sold to help defray the expenses of the journey. The checks on our copy refer to specimens from Harvey's collection which are now in the Academy's herbarium with Harvey's labels and numbers clearly indicated. The note at the end of the list, we assume to be in Harvey's hand, “249 species represented herewith,” and the list to have accompanied a package of the specimens so marked. As to the provenance of the present “List” and of the manner in which the specimens came to us, we know nothing. An obscure pencil label on the folder merely states, “From Short's Duplicates” but it seems doubtful if the folder is truly the original in which the list was received by the Academy. Our known history of the C. W. Short herbarium seems to indicate that the Harvey Algae did not come from Short.
