<p>This large collection of Academy correspondence includes its only assortment of official letters.* It was assembled as the corresponding secretary's file by Edward J. Nolan and continued by James A. G. Rehn. Analyzed, in part, by Rehn the task was completed by WPA help during the 1930's. Nolan, in his official capacity as corresponding secretary, librarian, editor and chairman of the Academy's publication committee, preserved a great number of his answers. He kept holographic copies of 1,469 letters addressed to some 557 recipients.</p>
<p>In surveying the collection, non-official letters concerning individuals were removed to other collections. Those referring to the exchange of publications were transferred to <emph render="italic">collection 344.</emph></p>
