Industrialist and amateur naturalist and ornithologist, Gibson accompanied Stanton's Expedition to the Grand Canyon in Colorado. Later he went to North Greenland on the first Peary Expedition sponsored by the Academy of Natural Sciences, as ornithologist. His collection was incorporated in that of the Academy and the report written up by Witmer Stone and published in the Proceedings. This correspondence consists of 18 letters signed by Gibson and 3 by his wife Katherine B. Gibson. One of the latter contains most of the biographic information used by Witmer Stone in his obituary notice, The Auk, vol. 44, p. 293, 1927.
