<p>Mineralogist, geologist, professor of chemistry, mining engineer, lawyer, legislator and railroad executive, Keating was described as one of the best trained scientists in the United States. He studied in both Europe and America. Accompanied Major S. H. Long on the U. S. Expedition to St. Peters River and wrote a two-volume journal about it. He helped organize Franklin Institute. As a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences he acted as Recording secretary and member of the Publication Committee, from 1822-26. Included are three communications on minerals, read before the Academy, report of the Committee to procure diplomas for the founders and 50 pages of geological notes on Long's expedition.</p>
