Henry Christopher McCook, 1837-1911, both a naturalist and minister, published and illustrated many scientific and popular science books, exhibiting a careful and accurate scientific intellect as well as a creative mind. His books and illustrations range from scientific studies of ants and spiders to fanciful creations, all drawn from his natural history observations. This series consists of 257 drawings, 75 prints, 10 teaching diagrams, 3 sketchbooks, and 1 watercolor painting. Many of the drawings in this collection were used to illustrate his various scientific and popular science publications, although not all of the drawings are by McCook. Of note are eight signed ink drawings by Daniel Carter Beard, 1850-1941, best known for his political cartoons. Also of note are the beautifully hand drawn and colored plates of spiders by Elizabeth Fearne Bonsall, 1861-1956.

<bioghist>
<p>Henry Christopher McCook was born in New Lisbon, Ohio, July 3, 1837. Both a naturalist and a minister, McCook published many scientific and popular science books, exhibiting a careful and accurate scientific intellect, as well as a creative mind. McCook received his preparatory education in the public schools of Ohio, and taught school before entering college. He was graduated from Jefferson College in 1859, and on September 11, 1860, he married Miss Emma C. Herter, of New Lisbon. He entered the army as first lieutenant of the Forty-first Volunteer Regiment of Illinois, and later became Chaplain, 1861-62. Ordained to the Presbyterian ministry in 1861, he served in Clinton, Illinois, 1862-64, St. Louis Missouri, 1864-9, and finally Philadelphia, in 1870. Although a minister by profession, McCook was an excellent naturalist, using his summers to study ants and spiders, leading to the publication of many scientific books and papers. </p>
<p>In the summer of 1877 McCook visited Texas to study the agricultural ants, as the question had been raised as to whether such creatures inhabited the Southern States of North America. His tent was pitched in a young live-oak grove and here he remained for some weeks, minutely watching these interesting insects. "Stooping over on hands and knees or prone upon the face, crawling slowly along, with eye fixed on the eager insect." The result of his studies was printed in The Natural History of the Agricultural Ant of Texas, published in 1879. </p>
<p>In 1879, McCook started for New Mexico to investigate the honey ants, as little was known about them at that time. He did not travel all the way to New Mexico, having found a nest at the mouth of the Garden of the Gods at Colorado. Here he commenced studies that uncovered many of the mysteries concerning these ants with their strange honey casks. By following the movements of the ants at night with a lantern he discovered that the sources of the honey they collected were the oak galls of cynipid wasps. These studies were published in The Honey Ants of the Garden of the Gods, and the Occident Ants of the America plains, 1881. </p>
<p>While McCook's first studies in natural history were confined to the ants, spiders also claimed his attention. In 1889-1893 he published his most extended work, American Spiders and their Spinning Work, in 3 illustrated volumes. 853 text figures and forty colored lithographic plates of 913 figures illustrate the whole. A total of only 250 sets were printed by the author, 150 of which were "Authors Editions". The book represented the most comprehensive accounts of the habits of spiders since the times of Blackwall and Menge. </p>
<p>McCook became Vice President of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia on May 23, 1882 until December 1900, having been elected a member of the Academy in 1875. He had also been elected a member of the American Entomological Society in 1877, and was elected as President of the Society in 1898. Lafayette College gave him the honorary degree of Doctor of Science for his attainments as a naturalist and scientist. </p>
<p>In lighter vein, McCook wrote books of a popular nature, such as Tenants of an Old Farm (1885), Old Farm Fairies (1895), and Nature's Craftsmen: Popular Studies of Ants and Other Insects (1907). His last work, Ant Communities and How they are Governed (1909), was written while he was in ill health, but it is a work of unusual value and interest, comparing the social activities of ants and humans. While he held that social insects have many traits in common with man, McCook also recognized that "there is an element that separates him from all other creatures by an impassable gulf". </p>
<p>His position in the world of science was a unique one. The greater part of his work was original, and he was a master in the study and investigation of the life history of ants and spiders. He died in Devon, Pennsylvania, on October 31, 1911, survived by a son, a daughter, and his second wife, Eleanor D.S. Abbey. </p>

<p>This series consists of 257 drawings (the majority of which are done in ink, the remainder in pencil and/or watercolor), 75 prints (lithographs, 7 hand colored), 10 teaching diagrams, 3 sketchbooks, and 1 watercolor painting. The items range in size from 4 x 2 cm. to 58 x 73 cm. Subject matter includes American spiders, American occident ants, Texan agricultural ants, honey ants in the Garden of the Gods, Colorado, fairies, pixies, and anthropomorphic insects used to illustrate children's and popular science books. Illustrations can include notes to the artist, colorist, and printer regarding size, details, colors, etc. Bracketed titles are taken from the corresponding illustrations in the book, unless otherwise stated. </p>

<p>Not all of the illustrations are by McCook, although few are signed. Only those which are signed are credited to the various artists. Artists represented include: <persname encodinganalog="700" role="artist" source="lcsh">Daniel Carter Beard, 1850-1941 </persname>(8), <persname encodinganalog="700" role="artist">Edwin Sheppard </persname>(8), <persname encodinganalog="700" role="artist">M.K.T. </persname>(5), <persname encodinganalog="700" role="artist">F. Some of the test proofs include the names of women who were assigned to color the prints. </p><p>The preface of volume one gives credit to some artists: "Many of the cuts have been redrawn by competent artists, but a large number remain as figured by myself on block or paper. Among those who have assisted in making the drawings are the well known artists and arachnologists, Mr. J.H. Emerton, of Boston, and Dr. George Marx, of Washington; also, Messrs. Edwin Sheppard and Frank Stout, of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia; and the Misses Bonsall, of this city [Philadelphia]." </p><p>The preface of volume three gives credit to Mrs. Elizabeth F. Bonsall for making original drawings for "nearly all the plates contained in the atlas". </p><p>When drawings have been identified as the originals for book illustrations, the location is noted with volume, page and figure number (Volume:page:figure. For example, 1:297:273 is volume 1, page 297, figure 273.) In the case of plates, only volume and plate number is listed. </p>
