<p>This collection, executed in Paris, contains portraiture of 43 scientists, sculptured by 29 different artists. Four named series are represented, i. e. &#8220;Series numismatica universalis vivorum illustrium&#8221; (20 examples); &#8220;Collection des hommes illustres&#8221; (2 examples); &#8220;M&#233;dailler francais c&#233;l&#233;bres XIX siecle&#8221; (1 example); &#8220;Galerie metallique des grands hommes francais&#8221; (7 examples).</p>
<p>Gift of Thomas Bellerby Wilson, Feb. 1848, described and the medals listed by name of scientist in the <emph render="italic">Proceedings, </emph>of the Academy, v. 4, p. 33, 1848. The series was cataloged at a later date by E. J. Nolan, but the 44 listed in the library catalog is not exactly like the published account. The list which accompanied this present day collection, duplicates the Nolan list. Indications point to an exchange of certain items; for example the Bonaparte medal, listed by Nolan has the date of Bonaparte's death, 1857, inscribed on it, so must have been placed in the collection after 1848.</p>
<p>The large frame holding the medals hung in the Library reading room for over a hundred years, but currently the medals have been removed to a box and housed with the manuscripts.</p>
