The label on the outside seemingly placed there by a book dealer reads, “Spencer's (Joshua) commonplace book, in which he has noted subjects of natural history, philosophy, etc., autographed manuscript, with numerous curious drawings of quadrupeds, birds, insects, shells, hermaphrodites, etc., exceedingly curious, folio. 1695-1718.” From internal proof the dates cover 1692-1729.
