<p>Self-trained botanist and businessman, who used his trading opportunities to introduce exotic plants into England; friend and patron of John Bartram. Partly responsible for the rapid growth of the Royal Gardens at Kew, to which he contributed seeds and plants. His knowledge was so extensive that his advice was asked by other botanists. The letters were written to Collinson by (1) Petre,<note>
<p>Petre, d. 1742. An early specialist in elms, cedars and larches, to whom Collinson sent seeds and trees.</p>

Dec. 9, 1742, saying that Philip Miller misunderstood
about the plants for his estate; (2) Philip Miller<note>
<p>Miller, Philip, 1694-1771. Curator of the Apothecaries' Garden, Chelsea; author of the &#8220;Gardener's Dictionary&#8221;, 1731, which went through many editions. He helped to support John Bartram on his journeys and was responsible, in part, for naming the new species found on those journeys.</p>

Dec. 5, 1767, giving information about <emph render="italic">Tritellaria, </emph>etc., with personal news. On the back of this letter is a trial note to the Duke of Richmond, signed by Collinson, dated Dec. 21, 1767; (3) Thomas Penn, undated, expressing his thanks for spruce cones, and ordering a box from John Bartram.</p>
