These colored proofs of fishes were laid in Holbrook's Ichthyology of South Carolina, 1860. The plates for this edition were done by A. J. Ibbotson and A. Sonrel and colored by J. Burkhardt. These loose proofs were possibly intended for the second volume, which was never published. Many of the figures have manuscript names, the chrography identified by Henry W. Fowler as that of Theodore Gill. The latter studied the Academy's volumes and published a paper about Holbrook's fishes.
