This unpublished writing occupies 163 pages, the small-sized leaves on which it is written being pasted in a scrapbook. It is sparsely illustrated with pencil text figures. It presumably describes a collection given to the Smithsonian Institution. At the Smithsonian are various proofs of pages entitled, “Contributions toward a Monograph of the Chitonidae”. We have 27 pages which were given to H. A. Pilsbry by W. H. Dall. Carpenter in early life was an English minister, educator, philanthropist and reformer with a special interest in natural history as a hobby. Later he became a specialist in the study of mollusks and wrote two monographic works which were published, shorter papers, and the unpublished monumental work on Chitons. He visited America and became associated with the California Academy of Sciences in 1857 and studied West Coast shells. He returned to England for a short time and in 1865 went to Montreal to live. His collections, not included in the British Museum, in the Smithsonian or left at the California Academy of Sciences were all given to Magill University in Montreal. The book has been in the Department of Mollusks for years and was liberally quoted by H. A. Pilsbry in his Manual of Conchology by simply adding the words, “Carpenter's ms.”

Since the proof sheets were a gift of W. H. Dall we assume the manuscript volume of Chitons came from the same source. It was Returned to the [UNK] [UNK] Division of [UNK] on 4/1/1970.
