Printed date of birth on our lithographic portrait is 1785 but his grandson, in 1914, when checking the biography of his grandfather for Nolan's history, and apparently taking his information from family records, gives it as 1786 in every case.

<scopecontent>

Corresponding secretary of the Academy from 1813 to his death in 1831, he was interested in science in general, but apparently a specialist in no single branch. Also a member of the Franklin Inst., and founder of the Hose Companies in Philadelphia. His residence in Germantown still stands, now being known as “Wyck” and there he entertained Lafayette when he visited Philadelphia. Collection consists of articles for publication, reports, photographic copies of portraits, letters from various sources about biographical details, and a portrait by [UNK] [UNK].
