Belden as “an intelligent farmer, solid Quaker, and member of the international circle of botanists who discovered, described and exchanged American plants between 1750 and 1800.” This Pennsylvania botanist and colleague of William Darlington and Joseph Trimble Rothrock was an important figure in Botany in America. In this collection we have a photostatic copy of Marshall's signature, facsimile copy of a letter from Benjamin Franklin and F. W. Pennell's 7-page biography of Humphrey Marshall, read before the Friends Historical Society and published by them.
