<p>Cope was one of the most distinguished American scientists of the 19th century. He contributed over 1300 papers to scientific literature, and described more than 600 new species. The bulk of his work was in the fields of paleontology, zoology, geology and anatomy. A member of this Academy, of the American Philosophical Society, and of several foreign societies, he was once a president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received many honors and medals for his accomplishments.
