Businessman, civic minded scholar and banker, with an avocation in the field of botany, he spent many years collecting, exchanging and studying plants. His special interest was in preparing a flora of Delaware and nearby regions. He maintained a wide correspondence with colleagues, of which the originals are in large part preserved by the Society of Natural History of Delaware. His extensive collections were purchased by the College of Pharmacy, New York City.
