Dramatist, politician, soldier and amateur botanist, Barker was successively alderman, mayor of Philadelphia and collector of the Port, comptroller of the U. S. Treasury and Assistant Adjutant General of the 4th military district. This diary gives details of his botanical excursions in 1828. An inserted note by John H. Redfield, gives biographical details of Barker.
