Formerly, there seemed to be a variation of meaning in the words used in describing the book collections. “Donations” included books bought on subscription, but actually paid for by the Academy and as such given to the library, “Deposits” might be loaned by the depositor, given outright or even purchased by funds subscribed by members. The library and publication committee was considered as a unit and the earliest donation book listed specimens for the museum right along with books and periodicals.
