Soon after the Race Street Building was opened in 1876, it became evident that more space would be necessary to accomodate all the growing facets of the organization. With the view of increasing its housing facilities, a committee became active in 1879 to increase Academy income. Committees to devise means of adding to the Building Fund, to superintend this increase and to collect funds for furnishings, all aided toward the final recommendations of the Committee on Plans for physical needs.
