Philadelphia conchologist, active in the Academy and curator from 1840-43, his extensive collection was bequeathed to the Conchological Section, duplicates being sold to buy other specimens and these labeled “John S. Phillips Fund”. Of his papers we have three workbooks: (1) The Catalog of his Cabinet was checked in an interleaved printed copy of Agnes Catlow's Conchologist's Nomenclator, and bequeathed to the Academy with his collection. The catalog was used in the Conchological Section for many years and carries entries in various hands, the last date being 1887. Notes including additions and corrections to the general index are made by H. A. Pilsbry. (2) Another workbook is a manuscript transcript, preceding page 1, of Joshua Alder's Descriptions of Some New British Species of Rissoa and Odostomia, with two plates. (3) Say's American Conchology, the signatures being rearranged to suit Phillips. This workbook copy of 258 pages is annotated and indexed.
