This traveler, anthropologist, naturalist, and lecturer was commissioned by the Academy to explore certain deltas of African rivers. He confirmed ancient accounts of pygmy people but stirred up much controversy with his books on Africa. His collections of birds were in part obtained by the Academy, various members contributing and three groups were added 1860-62. When in 1888 the Academy's bird specimens were cataloged, 419 of Du Chaillu's African skins were located. The collection includes a letter to Welsh thanking him for his note and ticket to a concert at Trinity College, Apr. 22, 1895, an accompanying clipping of a long eulogy of DuChaillu, and an [UNK] pocket [UNK].
