Amateur Lepidopterist and member of the American Entomological Society, but professionally an architect and sculptor. he published his own work on Lepidoptera, for which he prepared the drawings and made the plates himself. He collected widely and maintained a large correspondence with other enthusiasts. At his death his collection of Lepidoptera was estimated to be the best in the United States.

This numbered collection contains a small notebook of 72 pages with penciled illustrations, his signature on page 33 and scattered dates of 1856-58. It had been given to a boyhood friend W. Russell Robinson and donated to the Academy of Natural Sciences by his son Wirt. Of the 61 letters, 37 are by Strecker, written mostly to Henry Skinner, and the others pertain to the possible purchase of his Lepidoptera collection offered for sale by his widow. The Academy was unable to meet her price and it was later sold to the Field Museum in Chicago in 1908.
