When just a child, Fowler started keeping a record of his field trips, with observations on things seen and heard, topography and environment. Called by him a “Journal,” entries have been kept through 1958 and because he discusses persons and places with the appropriate dates, his Journal becomes a biographical diary as well. His trips include local ones, many to New Jersey and the East coast of the United States, and those to far off places, in Hawaii, China, Japan, the West Indies and the Florida Everglades. While the subject matter has to do mostly with ichthyology, it includes many observations on birds, this subject being his second love. Some news clippings, many snapshots and drawings illustrate the work. An index to each volume is written on the end papers.
