Throughout its history, beginning in 1859, the Society has maintained three interests, collections, library and publication of research. The collections were kept distinct for a long time but eventually were incorporated with those of the Academy of Natural Sciences.

The papers include catalogs of special collections, memoranda of donations, desiderata, lists, labels and summaries. Donor's names mentioned are Frank H. Genung, E. T. Cresson, Sr., Frank Mason, G. R. Crotch, L. Heligbrodt, and George H. Horn. Diptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera in general, Lucanidae in particular and Hymenoptera are treated.
