The building was erected at the corner of Broad and George Streets, plans being started for it in 1837 and the building dedicated on May 25, 1839. The papers include plans of the various Academy members, a committee report to William Maclure, copies of the Morton-Maclure correspondence regarding the plans, with Maclure's suggested changes and enlargements dating from 1837-39,

The original of this correspondence is on file in the American Philosophical Society's manuscript collection.

various records pertaining to the enlargement of the building, 1847-55 and finally, the corner stone contents of the 1839 building which were returned to the Academy in 1903.

The items have been collected from various archival sources and assembled in 1960.
