Physician nephew of Prof. Joseph Leidy, he began this biography of his uncle, but left it unfinished at his death. The papers include three drafts covering the years 1823-69: (1) a short 18-page preliminary account (2) typescript record of 373 pages (3) a revised copy of 202 pages, deposited by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

Many letters by Joseph Leidy, I, to F. V. Hayden, S. F. Baird and F. B. Meek have been copied, in part, in the text of the biographies.

On deposit from the College of physicians, in part. A check of the inclusions shows that the letters are not copied in their entirety, but paraphrased, translated or otherwise changed by the biographer. The letters are, in part, to be found at the Smithsonian Institution, a microfilm of which is filed at the Academy.

E. D. Cope's criticism of 1869, with the letter by Prof. Newberry in defense, with Henry Osborn's correspondence about the controversy are included. Four letters by Joseph Leidy, II, to Joseph K. Corson, about his uncle's papers and 85 letters addressed to Joseph Leidy, II, complete the collection.
