<p>This English-born gardener, was also a horticulturalist, amateur botanist and nurseryman of Germantown, Pa.; founder and editor of <emph render="italic">Meehans' Monthly, </emph>a gardener's magazine; State Botanist for the Board of Agriculture; and City of Philadelphia Councilman. Academy member and vice-director of the Botanical Section, he concerned himself with the library and with botanical and publication business. In his letters he refers to the Bornm&#252;ller collection of plants, to the Thomas Lea herbarium, to the Elias Durand Library donated to the Academy and to the Charles Eastwick Smith collection of correspondence bequeathed in 1900. Included are letters, notebooks (Fendler's Venezuelan Plants), illustrations, photographs and biographical papers amassed by F. W. Pennell.<note>
