Amateur botanist, conchologist, Philadelphia business man. He was a life member of the Academy and served it as Councillor, Conservator of the Botanical Section, Chairman of the Publication Committee, and Secretary of the Conchological Section. He took charge of the Academy's Herbarium in 1885, purchasing and donating valuable sets of plants thereafter. He made occasional botanical excursions with Asa Gray and others. Spending his summers on Mount Desert Island, he later published a catalog of its flora.

The Botanical Section initiated, through a committee of three, namely Thomas Meehan, George M. Beringer and Stewardson Brown, the Redfield Memorial Herbarium Fund, the money being realized from the sale of his herbarium, minerals, shells and library, which were willed to the Academy. Its purpose was to provide a salary for a botanist and to help maintain the herbarium.

These papers consist of an article, “Flora of the New Jersey Plains” and donation records to the Redfield Memorial Herbarium Fund, dated 1896.
