Born in New York, LeConte early showed an interest in entomology and collected in various out-of-the-way places in this country. After moving to Philadelphia he became closely connected with the Academy. In 1859 when the American Entomological Society was founded, LeConte gave the use of his home for the meetings and was its first president. This collection includes many items pertaining to his father Major John Eatton LeConte and other members of the family.

Contained in the collection are 1525 letters, lists of Coleoptera bearing names of Zimmermann or Lacordaire, a bundle of algal mounts (conserved in the Academy's herbarium) and various notebooks on scientific subjects. Of a more personal nature are membership cards, photographs, souvenirs, newspaper clippings, business statements, legal documents and writings.
