One letter addressed to F. V. Melsheimer, the remaining 16 to Johann F. Melsheimer, the eldest son. The second son, F. E. Melsheimer completed the trio which were chacterized by Say as the “Fathers of American entomology.” The letters deal largely with mutual entomological interests, and include much information about Say's collecting trips during the years covered, particularly his trip to Florida in 1817 with Maclure, Ord and T. R. Peale, and the Long Rocky Mountain Expedition.
