<bioghist>
<p>Writer and nature artist, William Lloyd Baily published several books on flowers, birds and trees, but his most noteworthy achievement was this hand painted work on hummingbirds, which was never printed.
</p>
</bioghist>

<scopecontent>
<p>These four quarto sized volumes contain 58 pages of watercolors, each page measuring 34 x 27 cm., with varying image sizes. Each volume includes a dated title page and a contents page, handwritten in black ink, and each plate is followed by a hand written description. The watercolors are notable for the portrayal of the iridescence on the plumage of the hummingbirds, a technique invented by Baily, accomplished by the use of gold and silver leaf. A relative, John Collins, assisted Baily in the artistic work; three plates actually carrying the signature "J. Collins". Some scientific and common names given by Baily have been changed over time, and the correct names are noted. </p>
