Explore the magical world of the Academy’s phenomenal beasts with a weekend of spellbinding, hands-on activities! Meet the Academy’s own live beasts and learn about the real animals that inspire your favorite wizarding stories.

Take in a Bunny and Broomsticks game, make a magical wand, and take home a dragon’s egg during this wild weekend where wizards are welcome. Wear a costume and get a $2 discount at the door or save when you purchase online.

Wild Wizarding Weekend Activities:

Auditorium Show: Bad Beasts
11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

On the page and on the stage, we are captivated by the animal bad guys from our favorite magic stories. Featuring the Academy’s own live “villains,” this show reveals the truth behind some of the most misunderstood creatures from fantasy and fiction.

1 p.m.

Whooooo loves owls? We do! Meet a few of the Academy’s resident live owls and discover why they’re more than just cool creatures of the night.

Castle Classes

Wizards learn a lot at school, and you can too! Don your robes and stop by our class tables: Medicinal Herbs and Plants, Defense Against Predators, Care of Domestic Creatures, Potions, and Animal Transformation. Featuring live invertebrates, fun make-and-takes, and never-before displayed specimens from our research collection, these stations will convince you that you don’t want to be late for school!

Sorted Out

Choose your favorite animals and attributes to get sorted into your houses, and wear your colors proudly. Will you be a cunning snake, a thoughtful raven, a loyal badger, or a brave lion?

Magical Myths

Where did the story of the cyclops come from? How did a narwhal turn into a unicorn? Check out specimens from our famous research collection, and chat with Academy educators to learn about the real animals that inspired the legends you love.

All About Owls

At this interactive tech cart, learn “owl” about how these nocturnal birds of prey are fearsome hunters despite the dark. Watch an owl pellet dissection under a microscope!

Magical Crafts

Cast a spell with your new magic wand, and a design a dragon’s egg to hatch at home with specially themed crafts for little wizards and witches.

Back by popular demand—roaring, moving, life-size animatronic dinosaurs invade the Academy for a multi-sensory experience for the whole family. State-of-the-art and scientifically accurate—down to the feathers on T. rexDinosaurs Unearthed features more than a dozen realistic, full-bodied dinosaurs, as well as skeletons, fossil casts of skulls, claws, and horns, real specimens of mosasaur and Spinosaurus teeth, an Oviraptor egg, and the ever-popular coprolite (dino poop). Visitors will experience brand-new interactives, such as a multi-touch table and a scale that tells you how you measure up to different dinosaurs. A Dino Detective touch-screen quiz, chances to control dinosaur movements, and other activities encourage exciting hands-on exploration. Fee in addition to museum admission.
