Spend your winter break with us! Warm up in Butterflies!, spend some time with our live animals, and travel back in time with Dinosaurs Unearthed. Celebrate what makes the Academy great with exciting new stage shows, fascinating fossils, hands-on science, and special specimens from our collections.

December 27: Dino Day

Come face-to-face with fossils, meet living relatives of ancient beasts, and explore the world of the dinosaurs all day at the Academy.

Throughout the Museum
Keep your eyes open for live animal encounters as animals wander the halls with their handlers.

Meet Eddie, our very own roaming T. rex as he greets visitors in the museum.

Dinosaur Detectives
11 a.m.
Do you know what makes a dinosaur a dinosaur? Can you tell a fossil from a fake? Put your skills to the test during this interactive stage show and meet a live animal that has some things in common with the extinct stars of the show.

Field Tested
1 p.m.
In this interactive stage show, get set for an adventure as you help prepare would-be scientists from the audience for an expedition. What do Academy scientists need when they go into the field for their research? The answers might surprise you!

On the Wing
3 p.m.
Meet the feathered inhabitants of the Academy during this live animal show.

Dinosaur Hall
Compare some of the freaky fliers that lived with the dinosaurs with those that are still around today. Check out casts, real animal mounts, and neat illustrations.

Science Live
Which came first—the dino or the egg? Peek into a dinosaur nest and explore the mysteries of dinosaur eggs.

North American Hall
Touch real fossils and use your dinosaur detective skills to solve prehistoric puzzles.

Dinosaurs Unearthed
Real science comes to life through roaring, thrashing, life-size animatronic dinosaurs and awe-inspiring stories of prehistoric Earth. The exhibit also features full-size Jurassic Period dinosaur skeletons, real fossils and fossil casts, hands-on activities, and the latest stories about dinosaur behavior and appearance.

Third Level
Make a dinosaur bookmark and recreate a fossil trackway to take home!

December 28: Live Animal Day

See firsthand how we take care of our live animals and learn from the stars of our dioramas all day at the Academy.

11 a.m.
Meet some of the live animals that call the Academy home during this live animal show. Discover their stories and learn what you can do to help their wild cousins.

Fur, Feathers, and Scales
3p.m.
Learn how what’s on the outside counts for the Academy’s live critters during this live animal show.

Science Live
Our keepers work hard to make sure our live animals are happy and healthy. See what goes into a tortoise’s lunch and how we make a parrot’s toys.

North American Hall
The animals in our dioramas may be a little less lively than our live animals, but they still have a lot to teach us. Touch real furs and see the striking skulls of the animals of North America.

Real science comes to life through roaring, thrashing, life-size animatronic dinosaurs and awe-inspiring stories of prehistoric Earth. The exhibit also features full-size Jurassic Period dinosaur skeletons, real fossils and fossil casts, hands-on activities, and the latest stories about dinosaur behavior and appearance.

African Hall
Stop by to see one of our live animals enjoying time in an exercise pen and get your critter questions answered. (noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.)

Third Level
Explore your wild side and make a skunk mask and snake bookmark to take home.

December 29: Bird and Bug Day

Where can you find animals with feathers and six legs? The Academy’s Bird and Bug Day! Learn more about our feathered friends and creepy crawlies all day.

See some special selections from our collections! See how birds and bugs come in many shapes and sizes.

North American Hall
Explore bird beak basics and peck, scoop, and pry your way through a birdy buffet. Enroll in Arthropods 101 and learn what makes a bug a bug.

Dinosaurs Unearthed
Real science comes to life through roaring, thrashing, life-size animatronic dinosaurs and awe-inspiring stories of prehistoric Earth. The exhibit also features full-size Jurassic Period dinosaur skeletons, real fossils and fossil casts, hands-on activities, and the latest stories about dinosaur behavior and appearance.

Second Level
Stop by and visit our live invertebrates at their temporary home by the Panda diorama. Ask our critter keepers your burning bug questions and touch a real live bug.

Third Level
Make a jumping spider and a brainy bird bookmark to take home.

December 30: Weird-Thing-in-a-Jar Day

Science is surprising, inspiring, and weird! Come see the weirder specimens in our collections all day at the Academy.

They don’t live in jars, but the live animals of the Academy are plenty weird! Meet them  during this live animal show.

In this interactive stage show, get set for an adventure as you help prepare would-be scientists from the audience for an expedition. What do Academy scientists need when they go into the field for their research? The answers might surprise you!

Where in the World?
3 p.m.
Use clues from our critters to figure out where in the world they come from. Ask the right questions and put your observation skills to the test in this live animal show.

Science Live
How do scientists across the Academy preserve specimens for research? Come find out about the amazing techniques.

Peer into jars from the Academy’s collections for some weird and wonderful surprises.
